newspaper report

KOTA KINABALU: A cable theft suspect was nabbed by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB)'s auxiliary police and Royal Malaysian Police personnel about 11.30pm last night.

The suspect who did not possess any identification documents is believed to have been caught cutting leftover underground streetlight cables near an SESB substation in Telipok.

SESB managing director Abdul Razak Sallim, in a statement here today, said the incident followed another theft 10 days ago in which a suspect was detained at the same location.

"The streetlights along Telipok road failed to function fully after thieves cut and stole the underground cables which were supplying electricity to the streetlight panel belonging to the local authority," he said.

He said tools believed to have been used by the suspect were also found at the location.

Razak said SESB nabbed and handed over five suspects to the police this month.

According to him, since September 2009, SESB has recorded 46 cases of stolen assets and apprehended 38 suspects.

He added that SESB, in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, would step up patrols to eradicate the menace.
